Excelente calidad, el sonido potente, la apariencia es buena,el estuche no es acorde al precio del instrumento, no tiene bisagra y durara poco de tanto abrir y cerrar, el estuche de la special 20 es mucho mejor.

Tiene un filo que es ligeramente incomodo en la lengua pero al poco tiempo te acostumbras, es un detalle que hohner tiene que cuidar, no tiene numeracion pero eso no es problema.

Definitivamente es un instrumento muy bueno,su precio es justificado, yo tengo una lee oskar, una hohner special 20 y ahora la hohner meisterklasse todas en C y las hohner son a mi gusto de mejor sonido, la lee oskar no es mala solo me gustan mas la hohner y en especial la meisterklasse

Hohner Super Chromonica Deluxe, Key of C Review

I purchased one of these a while back more out of curiosity than of necessity, as I already own a Super 64 Chromonica (4 octaves which I reviewed elsewhere on Amazon) and CX-12 (3 octaves, just like this one), and a couple of Super Chromonicas. The lowdown is this: the sound quality is wonderful, better than the Super Chromonica that it is based upon, and better than the CX-12, and close if not equal to the Super 64. Notes are bright, and it is easy to play and sustain notes, even in the low register. It has the advantage of possessing the higher quality of the Super 64, but in a smaller, easier to hold package (while sacrificing the lower octave of the Super 64 which, unless your music calls out for it, is rarely needed, so most players won't notice or care about the omission).

I've played the Super 64 recently in shows. The Super 64 is really a great harmonica: great quality and sound, round holes for comfortable tongueing. I see this harmonica as a Super 64 that for some may be easier to handle due to its smaller size. The size difference is due to the decreased range of the Super Chromonica Deluxe and covers that don't extend to the end of the instrument as they do on the Super 64. If you are used to the size of the Super Chromonica, the Super Chromonica Deluxe has the same size. But what is neat about the Super 64 and the Super Chromonica are the holes are in the exact same position and have the exact same size, so if you put them side by side, they align perfectly. This means if you become comfortable playing one, then it is easy to transition to the other.

Last week I grabbed the regular Super Chromonica, and spent maybe 4 hours practicing with it for an upcoming show, just to see what it would be like to transfer back to the Super Chromonica Deluxe after the week was over. When I returned to the Super Chromonica Deluxe, I noticed that the tone quality was definitely improved, and toungueing comfort was far superior. I'm really glad I took a chance and bought this instrument, and I hope that Hohner continues to offer it.

At the time of this review, there is only a couple of dollars difference between the CX-12 and the Super Chromonica Deluxe. The difference in tone quality between these two harmonicas is quite evident, and for that reason alone, I would recommend the Super Chromonica Deluxe over the CX-12 (see my review of the CX-12 for more details on that instrument and how it compares to the regular Super Chromonica).

Hohner Super Chromonica, Key of C Review

The 270 is probably the most widely used chromatic out there, and it is probably the harp you want to get if you are just starting out with chromatics. Its 3 octave range gives you access to plenty of music, and gives you additional freedom to improvise over a 10 hole chromatic. The quality of the instrument is consistently good for the price, and is nearly identical to the 260. The playability of the instrument is perhaps not as good as the CX-12 or Super 64 (round holes and better mouthpieces are the major difference), but you probably don't want to spend double the cost of the 270 for those reasons alone, especially if you are just starting out (or are just a casual player -- I know the 270 served me well for nearly 20 years before I got more serious and stepped up to the Super 64).

The slide is superior in my opinion compared to the CX-12, and slightly better than the Super 64. Important if you play fast pieces with accidentals or use trills.

If you already have experience playing chromatics and want better playability, either the CX-12 (not the greatest slider) or the Super Chromonica Deluxe or Super 64 (both which have better sound) may be worth looking into. But in all other cases, the 270 is the best machine for the price.

Hohner Larry Adler Professional 12, Key of C Review

I bought this harmonica on a friend's recommendation who said that it was the best. When I tried it after purchasing it, I found that the harmonica is pretty airtight, but the tones were nowhere as sweet as what I have heard in the professional harmonica recordings. Moreover, the piece I received had a middle "F" out of tune. So, I was forced to return it. This was the first ever Hohner I purchased, and was sadly surprised to find it out of tune. I guess I will buy another Hohner harmonica, may be a 270 Super Chromonica (Key of C) or a CX-12, but only after I have tried it personally in some shop. And, I may not be buying it online, in all probability.

Hohner Chrometta Series Harmonica Chrometta 10 253 Review

In general I like the other Chrometta harmonicas I have owned (the 8 hole model 250 and the 12 hole model 255) but the layout of this harmonica is odd.On most harmonicas (including other 10 hole chromatics I have had) the first note on the harmonica is the root note of the key of the harmonica. So, for example, if the instrument is in the key of C the first hole blow note is a C.

On this instrument the first hole starts in the middle of the scale(G). This can be a problem for players like myself who are use to the conventional layout of the instrument.

Hohner Super Chromonica Chromatic Harmonica, Key of Tenor C Review

Now, I love the idea of a chromatic harmonica. A typical harmonica has notes in the scale of the key it is in, arranged into chords. but there are no sharps or flats. The chromatic has the main 8 notes in 4 holes repeated over a couple of octaves, three if there are 12 holes. The button, when depressed, raises the note a half step by selecting alternate reeds. Thus I love being able to play complex melodies that I can't play on a regular harmonica.

As a point, you can't play "Greensleeves" on a regular harmonica. There is an accidental that can't be played unless you can bend, or fake it. Just one, in the whole song, and it does not sound right to me.

So I bought one of these at a local music store.

And I can play things like "If I were a rich man" from Fiddler on the Roof. But not always.

See, the reeds on this thing stick all the time.I called Hohner, they said, "send it to us. There is no user procedure that we can recommend under warranty for unsticking a reed."

There is no access for cleaning. So far I've managed to get reeds unstuck when they were stuck by doing something Hohner said never to do: when I asked them specifically: using water. I've used a syringe to spray distilled water into chambers where reeds were stuck, and gotten them unstuck, then shaking the water off.And then, a couple playing sessions later, they stick again.

And right now, the #4 reed is stuck, exhale, main bank (not the alternate bank), and I have to wash the harmonica again. The first bank tends to stick more than the others.

I want to buy a CX at some point, just because of the access, because they can be taken apart by the end user.

I could not recommend this harmonica because of the reed problems.I've had reeds stick immediately after a cleaning. The other person who reviewed one suggested that the harmonica should have been tested on a bellows before shipping, but it might well have stuck because it was bumped in shipping. Because of that, were you to try to play one professionally, I'd suggest a backup. And it seems that one instrument should be enough.

Hohner 364 24 Marine Band 12 Hole Harmonica (Key of C) Review

I've had two lower end harmonicas, but this one is pure quality.Playing the harmonica really hasn't been fluent until I got this harmonica with it'sdeep and not too high pitch range.I enjoy playing the harmonica more than ever since I got this one, playing along side Johnny Cash on my Zune.You should try it!

In my church, there was a precious man who loved to sing and play the harmonica.He was about 5' 2" and he had some type of brain damage when he was born.His whole life was centered around his family, church, and
music.His old harmonica was about worn out, and many times he said that he would like to have a Hohner Marine Band Harmonica.He lived on a very small social security check, so I ordered this harmonica for him.What a wonderful expression came on his face when I gave it to him. While he was not a polished musician, his music expressed his love of God, and all the congregation received a blessing.

Sadly, a few months later, he died during heart surgery.This man, in his lifetime, touched everybody with his testimony.The doctors came out of the operating room, their eyes full of tears, to tell the family that he had passed away.He had touched them with his sweet presence and reliance on the Lord (Whether I go or whether I stay, I'm a winner either way.").

When he was buried, his harmonica went right along with him, and I know that he is playing, in perfect pitch, praises unto God.

Hohner Meisterklasse MS Harmonica, Key of Db/C# Review

It is a really beautiful instrument. The aluminum comb, silver plated cover plate sound is very bright. I love it for graceful melody playing. Here is the problem I encountered - on most holes, the blow bends and draw bends give that ringing "dog-whistle" noise. I fixed the problem by taking off the cover plates and applying little squares/rectangles of vinyl tape to the reeds as needed. Search the web for the basics of this fix. Search under turbotape although you can use a number of other common adhesive tapes. You don't need turbotape. I also gapped the reeds.I am certainly no expert, but I have ruined a couple of harmonicas learning how to gap the reeds to my satisfaction. If you just play the harmonica without stressing the reeds, this model will not require adjustment. If you blow bend and draw bend don't experiment on a fifty dollar harmonica to learn taping and gapping the reeds. If you don't like working with your hands in delicate areas or you are impatient, don't try these adjustments.

Hohner Big River Harmonica, Key of E Review

Okay, I admit I don't have a Meisterklasse or some of the more expensive harmonicas, but after playing some of the more pricey Hohners (like the Special 20, which is nice, but it's honestly not as good as my Big River) I can say this is my favorite. I haven't noticed any problems yet with choked reeds. I don't bend my notes, which may be why I haven't heard rave reviews with this harp. And I do know that it's one of the cheapest harps, but I'd pay double the price for the service I do get outta' it.

I contacted the Hohner corporation through their customer service number on their website.The harmonica rep gave me a great heads up about the XB-40 harmonica.

First of all, the playing technique for this model is different, because of the design of the instrument.The reeds of this instrument are further away from the players lips.Whereas with a diatonic or chromatic harp, your lips are much closer to the reeds.

Second, since the reeds are further away from the players lips, they require more breath to make them vibrate.This extra breath makes the tone of the instrument richer, and the volume louder.

Third, most ten-hole diatonic harps sport only twenty reeds inside.This model, on the other hand, has forty reeds, which is twice the reeds of a normal ten-hole instrument.

Fourth, and best of all, each and every note bends on this model.Draw one out, bend it.Blow in for another, bend it.

And fifth, which is the personal one for me, I'm a lucky man.You see, I'm getting one of these for my 40th Birthday!I must mention I'm not getting the key of E, but the key of Low E, which is an octave lower!

Bottom line, if you want to bend notes easily, and have some fun doing it, forget your normal diatonic harp, and get your hands on an XB-40.Believe me, you'll thank yourself when you do.

Hohner Chrometta 12 Harmonica, C Review

While I enjoy my hohnica Educator Chromatic, as mentioned in another review, the Hohner Chromettas 10 and 12 are even better, in my opinion for a number of reasons.

Unlike the diatonic, whose compact size makes it easy to hold and play, traditional chromatics are very cumbersome to hold and play. The larger, square-edged Chromatics will actually make your left hand hurt while holding it to play for extended periods (and no, I don't have arthritis either). The round edges of the Chrometta makes them far more comfotable to hold and play at the same time, making it easier to trill, tremlo, wah-wah, and other harmonica effects.

Secondly, the sidebar key is a bit looser than traiditonal chromatics, meaning that there is a lesser chance of it getting stuck while playing.

Yeah, it's worth some bucks, but it's worth it to discriminating harmonicists.

Hohner 364 24 Marine Band 12 Hole Harmonica (Key of C) Review

Last October I purchased this harmonuca in order to reach some heretofore unreachable notes at the lower end. I was very pleased with the instrument to do that...however, this June I purchased an identical Hohner 364 24 12 hole Marine band harp for my playing partner and was dissappointed that the notes of each instrument at the lower end were not the same and that the newer instrument left chunks of varnish(paint?) in his mouth after playing.
Is there any way Hohner can make this right? I also own 3 Hohner chromatic harmonicas and I would like to continue to brag about Hohner's dependability and craftsmanship.

I love the High G Hohner harmonica.I feel it completes my showcase.As of my acquisition of my High G and Low F instruments, I have sixteen harmonicas.

The low F and G harmonicas are warm and rich in their lower registers.While the high G harmonica, also known as the piccolo harmonica, starts at the G above middle C, and climbs up to the highest note of the harmonica family.

This highest note, the top G of the high G harmonica, is also the highest G found on the piano.It's a note that has a few qualities that are both good and bad.On the good side, it's very high and piercing.However, on the bad side, it's a note that I don't intend to use very often.Reason being while it's very high and piercing, it's also harshly shrill.

I feel the high G harmonica is otherwise great.When a melody is played, it comes through very clear.

I've been a performing musician for over thirty years and a harp player for about 20 years.I've tried Marine Band, Blues, cheap Korean, all kinds of harps and I don't think you get any more value than these Golden Melodies.Excellent tone, easy bending, and long lasting.The curved coeners make them more comfortable to grip and they just sound righteous.The only drawback is they don't hold well in my "mandies". (That metal contraption that Bob Dylan and others use to hold the harp while playing guitar at the same time.)

Lee Oscars are great harmonicas.They play real clean and last a long time.I also like Honner special 20's.They sound a little different (I like the sound more), but really, any of the harmonicas that are in the $17 to $25 range are good, pro harps.Even the Big River harps sound real good, and I think they are $13.I've had some Big River's though that take a little more air then Lee Oscars, Special 20, Blues, Herring Blues, Suzuki.The cheep harmonicas are really beginner harps, and don't sound that good (no piedmont specials please).If you are a beginner, I recommend you buy a $22 Honner special 20, in the key of C (most books are in C, but some use A, so check) to start with.You will experience less frustation as bends are a lot easier, and the holes are spaced a little further apart.The Lee Oscar is about the same as a special 20 for beginners.

This is a very well made, comfortable, and easy to play harp.

The wood comb gives is a very full, complex, and dark tone. For my taste and playing style it's a bit too dark - especially on a low F harp, but that's a personal taste issue. I like aluminium combs a lot, which are the other end of the spectrum; quite loud and clear.

Bottom line is it's a very well made instrument. If you're looking for a deep woody tone, this is a good harp to use.

Suzuki Harpmaster Harmonica, Key of Bb Review

The price of a good apprentice/journeyman harmonica is getting steep, and my standby Bb Seydel Blues Session reeds are suffering, so I went looking for a new brand. Someone online said that Suzuki makes the Bushman Delta Frost, another relatively expensive (for me) harp I like that looks and sounds like a Harpmaster, and in one ofBrendan Power's videos he says he really likes the Harpmaster, and it was about 2/3 the price of either the Bushman or the Seydel (not to mention comparable Hohners). I've been very pleased over the few days since the Harpmaster arrived. Same loud, somewhat brassy tone as the Delta Frost, with a little more fluidity, like a Seydel. Easy bends that had gotten hard on the Seydel (but didn't start that way--I've got to stop playing with a dirty mouth). I'll be buying more.

The Hohner "Extreme Bending" (XB) Harmonica is expensive for an instrument that only plays one key and one scale (plus bends). Commendable as a piece of technology, the notes, all of the notes, bend like blades of grass. It's just the weight; the thick and light construction, the size, it all seems awkward. And the presentation-- a flimsy plastic case, the plates were loose (a screw had fallen out), it wasn't impressive. The sound is ordinary, playability requires some effort, yet the notes are extremely agile. There's something to explore on this harmonica, but it's not balanced.

Hohner 34B Old Standby Harmonica, Key of C Review

This harp is ok to have as a spare, but I would not recommend using it to learn on. It just sits in my truck as a spare harp to mess with during lunch breaks and when I have to wait on someone. It is alright for this, but its prob better to invest another 10 dollars and get a nicer one. The Marine Bands from hohner are a favorite of mine and are perfect to learn on. Its ok for the price.

Unless this particular harmonica is the only rotten apple in the barrel I do not recommend the Suzuki Chromatic Harmonica.

I had my eye on the Shaker Madcat for a while before I broke down and bought it. While it might take some fiddling to figure out the best way to hold it, it's lightweight with a good, clear sound and does the trick. Since I haven't been playing through amps for that long, I don't have much to compare it to, but my only real complaint is the short cord: you will definitely need to buy another cord and use the attached adapter. I am now looking for another mic with a dirtier sound, but this has been a good mic so far.

This is a great overall stage/recording microphone for harmonica, wind instruments and close up vocals.
PROS:
1.Very low feedback.Hands cupped over the mic won't induce feedback like other mics which makes this a good harmonica mic.Great for all very close up mic-ing tasks.
2.Very low distortion. It is very hard to induce distortion when playing up close.This makes it a very good saxaphone mic that can be positioned right at the bell.This is a CLEAN mic.
3.Great frequency response.Instruments sound natural.Voice sounds natural.A harmonica player that sings can probably use this mic for both.
4.No voice pop. Built in windscreen prevents voice pops even when your mouth is touching the mic.
5.Good small size.Easy to use with a harmonica.

CONS:
1.Doesn't distort for that bullet sound. If you want that Shure Green Bullet distortion and sound in your playing, you need to get the Bullet.Using a preamp with an overdrive feature can get you in the ball park but this isn't a Bullet replacement.
2.Not good for recording lectures or a group from a distance.Mic is designed to be 0 to 2 inches away from sound source.This is ackward for singers unless your style is to have your mic against your lips, then this might be the perfect mic for you.

OVERALL:
A great, clean mic for harmonica players.This is also a great utility mic for a band with mic-ed instruments.

Buying from AAAudio is a fantastic buy [...].At the time I ordered it, the price included both the XLR cable and the low to hi impedance transformer plug.[...].At this price, any band using instrument mics should have one or two of these hanging around.

Beginning Blues Harp (Harmonica) [Paperback] Review

Geez! What, does it cost A LOT to put tracks on a CD? The CD that accompanies this book is, that's right, one track. Yet the sections are really discreet lessons. That's annoying; I have to zip on search past the beginning every time I start and stop this CD.
The book has some useful stuff and it does have music notation mixed with the usual draw-blow notation used for harmonica. And the section on bending notes is excellent--it has practice riffs that test your ability to bend the note down halves and whole notes. There is even a one-hole three-note bent riff. Nice to learn. And the theory is better explained than in some books plus the written-out musical notation blues songs are great.
There are some useful tricks in here, so you have to forgive the silly idea of a one track cd. The sections are played quickly, so if you want to play along or listen again, you have to restart the CD. Maybe you can create an audio cassette tape cut into sections and cued for reference by lesson. I might try that, as I found a lot of merit in this book and CD package.

I've played LOTS of harmonicas (Hohner, Lee Oskar, Seydel, Suzuki, Bushman), and this is one of the best. It's loud, tuned well, and is comfortable to play. The Hohner Special 20 has been my harmonica of choice for the last ten years, but having tried the Harpmaster, I think I've got a new fave. It's got brass reeds (classic sound, and easier to adjust than phosphor-bronze), plastic comb, and sturdy stainless case. Just the way I like it. Plus, it's a lot cheaper than a Special 20, and frankly, I think Suzuki has better quality control than Hohner.

Hohner XB40 Extreme Bending Harmonica (Key of C) Review

If you like collecting novelties or interesting historical artifacts, this may prove to be one. There are at least new ideas coming forth in the area of harmonica physics and one might become an amazing product. I waited a month before I wrote this because I wanted to be fair to the incredible effort that went into designing this and making it affordable. Sorry, but it is hard to NOT bend notes and thus the sound "pallete" becomes very un-chromatic. It's good for honking but too much honking without contrast is dull. Contrary to what you might believe, Little Walter did more than just honk. He contrasted dirty and pretty sounds with his "Mississippi Saxophone" like a jazz master. My advice: use the money to buy a chromatic harmonica, or, buy Howard Levy's video "New Directions for Harmonica" and get some basics on playing a ten-hole diatonic chromatically by using that "simple" instrument expressively and imaginatively.

Have you ever bought a brand new harmonica, and found that the high notes sounded squeaky or that you couldn't even get a note out of them?But of course, you couldn't get your money back due to health laws.And that big harmonica-testing bellows they have at Guitar Center was never any help.This kit can fix those problems, and more.

Like any good piece of machinery, musical instruments go through a lot of use and need some fixing or replacement once in a great while.Guitars need new strings and neck adjustments, drum heads need tightening, horns need internal cleaning, and yes, even harmonicas may need maintenance on occasion.If you play harmoica frequently, this is an ideal tool kit to have.

I love my Big River harps.I have been playing harmonica for years, and nothing compares to this.

As a child, I first became interested in the harmonica by watching A Chipmunk Christmas.As I aged, I realized a few things from this.

First of all, there is no such thing as a Golden Echo Harmonica.Second, the harp music heard when Alvin plays Silent Night is in the Key of A, just like this harp.

When I recorded my Harmonica Heaven CD, I played Silent Night on this harp.It sounds exactly the same as Alvin's Harmonica.

If you're looking for a fine harp to play, I highly recommend buying a Big River Harp.

Hohner Blues Bender P.A.C. Harmonica (C) Review

The Hohner Blues Bender Harmonica is made in China.However, it should not be compared to the cheap, less than $10, harmonicas made there.The reeds are very responsive, simlar to the Special 20 and Lee Oskar. The tone is closer to actual pitch, as opposed to the Special 20 that is a bit flat and bluesy, and the Lee Oskar that is tuned sharper and brighter. The comb is plastic and looks to be the same at the Special 20.The reeds appear slightly thicker and Hohner's website says they are.The cover has PAC stamped on it. The Hohner website says they are using "Patented Acoustic Covers" from the Marine Band Harmonica.Not exactly.The ends of the covers have openings like the Marine Band, but the back looks more like the Special 20 or Lee Oskar.The biggest difference is that the plates make the harmonica "sandwich" thicker, thicker even than the Lee Oskar, which I thought was thick. That means your lips tend to press on the cover plates, as opposed to, sliding more over and under them. For many, this will seem different, though it is not uncomfortable and some may end up liking it better.Notes are bendable, especially the #4 hole.Others take a bit more effort. I think the Special 20 is easier to bend, it is more like the Lee Oskar. Unlike the Big River, the Blues Bender's reed plates are recessed like the Special 20. One negative is the top and bottom cover plates look almost identical, so you have to pay attention to know which side is up.At this low price, I expect it will be very popular.

Hohner Chromonica, Key of C Review

I bought this harmonica for myself because i felf very limited with just 1 diatonic harmonica. My diatonic harmonica is in the key of C and could not play any sharps of flats. so i went out and looked at some chromatic harmonicas at ted brown music. i found that the price range was from $100.00 to about $250.00, the $250.00 one was the horner super 64, that was just too much for me. i found that i got a nice bright sound out of the wooden chromonica key of C. and it played a variaty of notes. so i went with it. Upon playing it i reaolised that it was unussually stiff and i could not bend notes AT ALL!!!! or it would either squeak or not play at all. i think i just have to break it in and it will be better than that. it would have been nice to have the addad low notes that are on the super 64 but i can live with going up an octive, it wont kill me. other then that it is an awesome harmonica and i am definately glad i purchased it. it also has a much bigger and fuller sound then the small diatonic harmonicas. Definately a bonus. :-)

Please note, I'm not a very experience player, but I thought I'd treat myself to a high-end harp. First, for such an expensive harp, the finish is not impressive. On the superficial side, the numbers aren't centered on the holes. On the more serious side; the corners of the reed plates protrude and they have jagged edges. Easy to file - but I shouldn't cut my lips on a $60 harmonica. On to the playability: the way the reed plates protrude over the comb, I find it difficult to get a proper seal; sometimes this creates a high pitched overtone on the 6 draw, and always a general loss of power. A very experienced player may not have any problem, but as an amateur I'd say this harp is "unforgiving" to imperfect technique. Bends are easy, too easy, I might say, as I'm constantly pulling notes a little flat. Again, for an experienced player this might never be a problem; but overall I find my special 20 much more forgiving. On to the tone: If you are a quality player who doesn't need a harmonica that is forgiving when you get a little sloppy, the tone on this thing is excellent, and quite unique. It has a warm round tone (though it can be thin, if you don't work it), and you can get a very nice mellow growl out of it, like I've never really heard before. Overall, I'd only by this harp if you're looking for something unique and you have the skill and time to tweak it. (If it didn't cost $60, I'd already have put it to the grinder.)

Lee Oskar Harmonica, Natural Minor Key of E Flat Review

The Lee Oskar E-flat minor harmonica: makes even the happiest tune sound like a funeral dirge! I love this harmonica so much.

If you are looking for a minor/flat harmonica, look no further than the Lee Oskars. The tuning for that sad, heavy depressive feel is spot on, and it's a typical Lee Oskar in every other respect:

*Plastic comb, typical of the LO's, is very easy on the mouth.
*The tuning is excellent. Right out of the box I was able to make "Turkey in the Straw" sound like a real tear-jerker. Wonderful! I couldn't stop smiling.
*Bends: again, this is a typical LO. Bends are stable and predictable. Basically, if you are a beginner having trouble with bends, this harmonica won't exactly help you much, but if you are comfortable and confidently play all three tones in the #2 draw for example, you won't notice any difficulty bending flats on this harp.

Avoid this harp if you are a true beginner and trying to learn correct tonal qualities and basic bends.
Buy this harp if you are at least an intermediate beginner, can already play by ear somewhat well, and want to experiment with different types of music.

This harp is great for:
1. Playing Happy Birthday to someone on their 40th (haha,I just had mine)
2. Experimenting with Eastern European music
3. Making happy songs sound very very sad (brings a smile to my face every time).

Other than that, it's a Lee Oskar, so it's stable, predictable and durable, IMHO. I would have given it 5/5, except that being a LO, it isn't quite as tight as I would prefer, but for what it is, it's really good. Enjoy!

Echo Harmonica, C Review

Please, Hohner, make more non-tremolo double reed harmonicas. I guess the demand isn't there yet. It took me a while to learn how to play this because I lip block the upper reeds and mostly play the lower reeds. I will use the upper reeds for transitions and contrast but most melodies I play the lower reeds. You CAN actually draw bend these reeds and it sounds better than any ten hole I have ever played. Compared to the Comet, this has a much more beautiful tone. It could be the wooden comb. I am certainly not a wood comb purist. My favorite mouth organ is the Hohner Super 64 which isn't wood. This Hohner 1493 is inexpensive. It is double reed, octave tuned, of course, and has a gorgeous tone which can be played with maximum expression. I would like to buy it in the other availble Key of G. I wish Hohner would use this design for some of its single reed harmonicas because the volume range is incredible. It would also be nice if the non-Tremolo double reeds were available in more than just two keys.

Hurricane Harps, "Hot House Blues" Harmonica, 10 Hole Diatonic, Key of D Review

I received a free harp along with a Hohner I ordered. I LOVE Hohner Special 20's and thought it would be great if there would be a cheap imitation of this great harp (which is a plastic imitation of the Marine Band.) That is what the Hurricane or Hot House Blues harmonicas are: cheap (or poor) imitations. It does not say where it was manufactured, but I suspect China. My harp in C had one reed that was noticeably flat. I cannot play it, even just for fun. Sure, you could give it to some kid to honk on, but then I would prefer the colorful Hohners. So, you get what you pay for. Though I waited for this harp with anticipation, I was not impressed. You get what you pay for. On the positive side, delivery was extremely quick.

This is a great book - probably the best book I've read so far. It hasalot to offer for both beginners and people who know their way around theharmonica. You don't have to be able to read music because chords, riffsand notes are explained in terms of steps in the scales. There are alot ofnice riffs and 17 solos to practice to and the book comes with a Cd thathelps to understand the riffs, solos and techniques I think it was a bitcomplicated to understand the way he explained the notes in terms of steps,but I learned a great deal about how you can translate the way of thinkingin one key to another. He explained very well how you can think when youplay a solo. The riffs and solos gave me hours of practice - and stilldoes. This book is a book that I comes back to from time to time becausethe more I learn to play the better I can understand some things in thebook. He explaines how blues- and rockmusic are build and the differencesbetween them. There is a great discography in the end with good examples ofgreat harmonica records. If you never have played the harmonica I wouldrecommend thatyou try to find another easier book to start with. Lee Oskar Harmonica, Major Key High G Review

It is my first Lee Oskar harmonica, I used to play Hohner Blues Harp MS before almost exclusively. Although it comes in an usually high key (well, this is how the High G is supposed to be! :) it can say a lot about this model of harp generally. It seems to be air tight, responsive, well built and tuned. The only unusual thing that I kind of had to get used to is feeling the letters and digits imprinted on the covers, but that's manageable. Overall good harp and I plan to buy more of those in different keys. Oh, and I just recently discovered that Junior Wells in 80s played the very same model of harp, and high G was one of his favorite! :)

This book teaches you how to play harmonica, it really does.The learning task has been pieced into small enough bites that it's almost painless.Just enough detail in the tablature/music is presented to be informative without being too complicated.For example, all of the licks are played in a shuffle style, but the written music is presented using straight eighth note notation.The shuffle is then subtly introduced on the CD.In an effort to mimic the CD, you'll end up shuffling, but you'll hardly think about it.

The DVD is a nice surprise.There's a lot of material on it that's not even in the book.For example, David Barrett gives a perfect tutorial on bending draw reeds 1 through 6.If you've been scouring the internet trying to find a good bending lesson and have not been able to pick it up yet, you're like I was before I watched his tutorial.Now I've made a lot of progress.

Here comes the one bummer about this book.It's printed on such cheap paper that the covers and pages start to curl the moment you unwrap the book.

Suzuki Fire Breath Harmonica, Key of Eb Review

I am a long-time harp player but a beginner "overblower", and I bought the Firebreath because I heard that it was designed to make this technique easier. For anybody not familiar with the term, overblowing is a rather challenging method for playing the missing notes from the chromatic scale on a diatonic harmonica; it is similar to bending but requires a tricky embouchure and an adjustment of the reeds (except on very expensive or custom made harmonicas). There are some excellent videos posted by Adam Gussow and Jason Ricci on Youtube that offer detailed instructions for this technique.
Anyway, I bought an Eb and a Bb Firebreath, and here is what I experienced:
I found that the Eb was much, much easier to overblow than any Hohner I had used, and I could overblow on the 4, 5, and 6 holes right out of the box without any modifications. I could even do a bit with the 3 hole, which was a new experience. With the Bb, however, I could not get clean overblows straight out of the box and had to fiddle with the reeds about as much as with Hohners. It is hard to tell if this is the harmonica's fault or if my embouchure is just not developed enough (I'm still at a point where I struggle a bit to hit those notes) or maybe lower keys are just more difficult in general. Aside from that, they seem to be very well-made harmonicas but I'm not sure they are significantly better than Hohners for general use.

DVD-New Directions For Harmonica-Expanding Your Technique (2005) Review

Howard Levy is a freak of nature. Is there anybody else on the face of the planet who can play chromatically (half-steps) on a diatonic (whole-step) harmonica like he does? If there is, I don't know about them. Howard's remarkable technique is probably the biggest physical innovation on any instrument since bottleneck slide guitar or the plunger over the trumpet bell. For now, his discovery that "all the notes" do in fact live inside the diatonic harmonica remains largely unsung. I only hope some young, super-talented musician will someday master this technique, become immensely popular and introduce an entire generation to Howard Levy's spectacular discovery. Maybe that's you??

Even though Howard is a virtuoso, there really is something here for everybody. With humility, patience and a vintage 80's shirt that would make Bill Cosby's sweater collection blush, Howard thoroughly lays out everything you could possibly need to know about how to play every note in the twelve-tone scale in all three octaves of a diatonic harmonica. (Each octave requires a slightly different technique, which is part of what makes Howard's playing so amazing.)

The discussion of ombechure (the shape of the mouth and tongue) for getting different notes is outstanding and thorough, though I would have liked to be shown how to get blow-bends, which is perhaps too basic for this DVD. (Note that this DVD does not deal with the chromatic (button) harmonica, as made famous by Toots Thielmans or Stevie Wonder. Chromatic harmonicas have a button on the side that moves the whole instrument a half-step to get the chromatic notes. Howard relies strictly on ombechure to achieve every note.) However far you get in this admittedly difficult technique is up to you... you don't have to master it to get a lot out of this DVD.

Howard's explanation of modes (and how a harmonica is just "a piano with only white keys") is an outstanding introduction to the subject for ANY musician, although some less esoteric examples of the mixolydian (cross-harp) and aeolian (natural minor) modes might have proven more accessible for beginners. The circle of fifths is also well-presented.

This is not quite an introduction to harmonica. I would recommend you be able to blow/draw single notes up and down at least the bottom two octaves of the harmonica, and bend a note or three in at least the bottom octave, before you dive into this CD. But even for novices, Howard's choice of what to show you when is laid out very thoughtfully. I continue to find it extremely helpful to watch this DVD from the beginning with harmonica in hand and follow along as far as I can with his examples, which get steadily more challenging as he moves up the scale and into more sophisticated (but never arcane) theory.

Howard's enthusiasm for the harmonica throughout this DVD is infectious, and his willingness to serve in stewardship to what I hope will someday be recognized as a remarkable legacy is evident. And of course his playing on "Autumn Leaves" and "Sweet Georgia Brown" is impeccably lyrical, listenable and empathetic to his piano accompaniment. A real treat for all musicians at all levels.

Suzuki Promaster Harmonica, Key of Bb Review

If you are used to playing Marine Bands, Blues Harps and Special 20's, the Suzuki Promaster will feel quite different at first.

For starters, it's completely metal. Even the comb is made of what looks and feels like a solid chunk of billet aluminum.

It feels heavy in your hands. Solid. Like a hunk of shiny metal.

As far as playability, it's a Suzuki so the low end draws come easy and clear. The highs are quick and tight. Since many harmonica folks tend to buy different types of harps, experimenting with tones and bends, I'll compare it to a few of mine:

Compared to my Lee Oskar, the Promaster feels tight, responsive and quick. Maybe it's the milled aluminum comb, but for some reason I find that I play quicker and nail the pitch easier. Don't get me wrong, I love the LO, but the Suzuki just feels quicker to me.

Compared to my Hohner Marine Band, the Promaster has a more airtight feel to it. With the slightest puff of air, there is a tone coming out of that thing, it's so sensitive. This made it sound kind of sloppy to me at first, when I didn't realize I'd developed a (bad?) habit of gasping and puffing small bits of extra air as I moved around the comb. On my MB I didn't notice it, but with the Promaster it caused "missed" and "extra" notes and chords that I had to work to get rid of. Once I cleaned up my playing a bit, those extras disappeared.

The sound overall is bright, and doesn't seem to have the natural brashness that the wood combed harps have, but of course you can experiment and mimic it pretty well on the Promaster.

On a lesser note, it comes in a custom case that is rounded on the edges and padded on the inside, so the harp doesn't rattle around in there and the case fits smoothly in a pocket without the square edges that most cases have. It's classy.

Bottom Line: the Promaster costs an average of $18 more than a Marine Band, but to me, harmonicas are such a low-cost instrument (in comparison to say, an oboe) that the initial cost is almost negligible. The reed plates in the Suzuki are replaceable. The case is nicer. It's a hunk of heavy metal in your hands. It feels small when you hold it. The shiny metal comb is beautiful and smooth. It sounds great, but that is subjective. If I had to choose one from either side of the diatonic spectrum, I'd probably choose the Suzuki over the Marine Band simply because of how it feels.

But I'd still pick up that humble old Marine Band and play it once in a while, too.

Consider the Suzuki Promaster:

-if you are an experienced musician and want to feel like your harp is a "real" musical instrument that someone could play in an orchestra.
-if you are a beginner and need extra "give" learning how to play the low end draws. It's strangely easy on the Promaster.
-if you think that an all steel and aluminum harmonica looks awesome

Avoid the Suzuki Promaster:
-if you are a die-hard traditionalist who only plays Marine Bands and other wood combed harps, or you just barely want to switch to a Special 20 (plastic comb).
-if you bend the heck out of the low end and rely heavily on blues techniques for a brashy, dirty sound
-if you play nightly gigs in small, dangerous venues and you like how the beer and tobacco scented wood comb on your Marine Band compliments your already well deserved street cred (I write this with admiration)
-if you balk at spending upwards of $45 on a harp.

That's it. I like mine and I hope you like yours too.

I love my Lee Oskar harmonicas. I have about ten harps and I wanted to check out some of these, since Lee is an outstanding player. The sound is top quality, easy to bend and the harp is fun to play. They are kinda pricey, and I have other harps at half the price which sound nearly as good. If you can spare the cash, go for it.

Hohner Pro Harp Harmonica, Key of C Review

I hesitated before buying this harp because I was unsure of the covers.Rest assured they feel good on the lips and work very well.

Mine was airtight and responsive out of the box, with only a slight adjustment needed for one reed.Pretty good!

The corners are a bit sharp, but a touch of sanding takes the edge off that.

It comes in a very nice plastic box.It closes with a solid click and will not pop open accidently.It's also vented through the bottom.That's either good or bad, depending on how you look at things.On one hand, it allows air circulation, permitting the harp to dry out if put away damp.On the other hand, it will permit some crud to get in if you habitually carry it around in your pocket.

The Pro Harp is mid-range in Hohner's modular system series (MS series).It has a plastic comb and the dividers are comfortable.The reed plates are replaceable, and the harmonica is built so as to be easy to disassemble for maintenance.You'll need a posidrive #1 for the screws.

Suzuki Fire Breath Harmonica, Key of Bb Review

I am a beginner "overblower", and I bought the Firebreath because I heard that it was designed to make this technique easier. For anybody not familiar with the term, overblowing is a rather challenging way of getting the missing notes from the chromatic scale on a diatonic harmonica--it is similar to bending notes but requires a tricky embouchure, and usually the harmonica reeds have to be tinkered with (except with very expensive or custom made harmonicas). For detailed instructions on this technique, there are some great videos on Youtube by Adam Gussow and Jason Ricci.
Anyway, I bought an Eb and a Bb Firebreath, and this is what I experienced: I found that the Eb was much, much easier to overblow than any Hohner I had used, and I could overblow on the 4, 5, and 6 holes right out of the box without any modifications. I could even do a bit with the 3 hole, which was a new experience. With the Bb, however, I could not get clean overblows straight out of the box and had to fiddle with the reeds about as much as with Hohners. It is hard to tell if this is the harmonica's fault or if my embouchure is just not developed enough (I'm still at a point where I struggle a bit to hit those notes) or maybe lower keys are just more difficult in general. Aside from that, they seem to be very well-made harmonicas but I'm not sure they are significantly better than Hohners for general use.

Clearly there is something ineffable about music, and clearly there things about music which cannot be imparted or rationally understood, but the babbling incoherent moron in this video does a truly superb job of making NOTHING understood!!His mind may have been present at one point in his life, but it is surely gone in this video.My advice to you if you wanna learn the blues harp is to look at a good spread of you tube videos.Let them teach you.But don't rely on this weirdo's ramblings to be in any way pedagogical.
