Masters of the Blues Harp: Note-for-Note Transcriptions from Classic Recorded Performances (Harmonica) [Paperback] Review

Masters of the Blues Harp: Note-for-Note Transcriptions from Classic Recorded Performances [Paperback]This is a difficult book. These transcriptions are accurate and well-done, but they are demanding. They are not easy to play; after all, these ARE some of the greatest harp songs of all time. You've got Sonny Boy(II), Slim Harpo, Little Walter, Paul Butterfield, etc.

The notation is clear and easy to understand. The song selection is pretty good.

One thing, and this is minor - the book does not come with a CD.I had to put together a CD to match the book.If someone does not have a good collection, that could prove slightly difficult. Most of the selections are pretty well known, so that shouldn't prove too difficult.

Lee Oskar Harmonic Minor Harmonica, A MINOR Review

Lee Oskar Harmonic Minor Harmonica, A MINORAs a total novice at playing the harmonica, I ordered this basically out of curiousity. It certainly increased my own enjoyment of the harmonica - per the claims in the description, it adds the option of minor chords so common in various types of ethnic music and A minor (being the "all white key" minor scale) is a great tuining to start with.

The only minor complaint is that the chord progression for the top holes is a bit hard to get used to - don't know whether this is just this particular instrument or true for A minor tunes in general.

The Perfect Harmonica Method: by Jerry Perelman [Paperback] Review

The Perfect Harmonica Method: by Jerry Perelman [Paperback]I always wanted to learn the harmonica. I liked the idea of being able to carry a little harmonica in my pocket or briefcase. I tried a couple of different books but never really got it. When I saw this book, I figured if this guy was a school teacher, he must have a method so I tried it.
I got it!! The book went slowly through all the basics and I learned how to gracefully hold the harmonica and play single notes. I also learned how to play alot of different songs plus I can NOW READ MUSIC! It's easy.
I love the CD because I can set it up just to play the drums along with me. My friend plays guitar and the book shows her what chords to play for the songs. We are really making music :)
This book is the best one. I'm having fun and I recommend it to everyone.

Hohner Super 64 Chromonica, Key of C Review

Hohner Super 64 Chromonica, Key of CThe range on this harp dips down one octave below middle C, which is fairly unique and adds to the overall possibilities of this instrument. Over the years, I have played several of the Hohner Chromatics and while its size causes this chromatic to be a bit more difficult to handle compared to a 12 hole like the Super Chromonica or the CX-12, my feeling is the quality of the sound compared to either and makes up for it in spades (and really, it's just a matter of getting used to the size). I think if I had one chromatic to own, this would be the one.

Note the holes are round, not square like on the 260 and 270. For some, this will mean more comfort. For me, well, I tend to agree, but for the most part, what round holes seem to imply with Hohner at least is the quality (and price) is going to be a bit higher. But that is just my experience with the 270, CX-12, Super 64, and Super Chromonica Deluxe (a higher quality version of the 270).

The other thing to comment on is the slide. It's really good (far better than the CX-12), but I actually get better speed with a good old 270 or Super Chromonica Deluxe. Maybe its because the slide is a bit longer because of the additional 4 holes. It is fast, never sticks, and doesn't make much noise. Still, I would predict any of you upgrading from a Super Chromonica will have to get used to the change, it won't be the same.

If you are a beginner, start out with the 270, it's a great value and it served me well for years. But if you are looking to step up, and can afford the price, I think this harp is well worth looking into.

Update: see also my review of the Suzuki Chromatix SCX-48 12 Hole Chromatic Harmonica, Key of C -- first impression is it has the same higher quality, and while it is only 12 holes, it is also far less expensive that a Super Chromonica Deluxe (price is about the same as the 270)! In fact, it feels and sounds like I am just playing a smaller version of the Super 64, which may make it the harmonica of choice.

Suzuki Promaster Valved Harmonica, Key of A Review

Suzuki Promaster Valved Harmonica, Key of AThis harp is my favorite in the key of A. I also have the key of G, Ab, Bb, B, C, D, E and low F.I personally feel that they are one of the finest harmonicas made. They play easy and provide good volume with little air. Originally I purchaced the key of G and was so impressed with that one that I purchased the others. I am not a professional player but the quality of sound that comes out of these harps makes me feel like one. They are a great harp for professionals and beginners alike. They are classed by Suzuki as a professional grade harmonica and priced very reasonable for the quality that you receive.

Hohner Chrometta 8, Key of C Review

Hohner Chrometta 8, Key of CI had an older Chrometta 8 which I played off and on for at least 20 years, also playing other harps in the meantime. I misplaced the old Chrometta 8 and just got a new one. It's more portable and comfortable than my other chromatics, more versatile than my diatonics. It looks so far like it might turn out to be as durable as my old Chrometta 8.I like the size and shape.I've played it a lot in the car, playing snippets of classical melodies and show tunes.
.
The limitations are, of course, the number of holes. That's not a serious limitation for someone starting out.Tone and volume and playability are comparable to any other "inexpensive" chromatic. Some reeds take a little more pressure than others, which is what I would expect.Admittedly I have not tried out any of the thousand-dollar-range chromatics.I have played larger chromatics and more expensive chromatics though, and for the price, I choose this one.

Hohner Weekender Tremolo Harmonica (Key of C) Review

Hohner Weekender Tremolo HarmonicaThis is a good functinoal harp. It's got a bright tremolo sound, fast for a tremolo (IMO), but better than all that, it has an A in the low register instead of a doubled G, making it great for melody playing!

A player would be hard pressed to find another tremolo harmonica of comparable quality with the Weekender?s affordable price! Has 24 double holes with plastic body. The double row of holes on Tremolo Harmonicas creates music with a distinctive vibrating (vibrato) effect. This is produced by the bottom row of holes and the top row of holes being played at the same time and tuned to the same note, with the top row tuned just slightly higher. This special tuning enables the player to make the tremolo sound which is especially popular for ballads, gospel and folk music.Due to health regulations this item cannot be returned.

Fender "Mississippi Saxophone" Tweed Harmonica Case Review

Fender 'Mississippi Saxophone' Tweed Harmonica CaseI bought this case as a graduation gift to myself. Previously, I had been carrying my harps in an old leather briefcase stuffed with a Wal-mart camping mat that I had cut harmonica-shaped holes into, (project cost: $12) which worked just fine. I have had my Fender MS Sax case since early 2003, have never regretted the purchase, and would certainly buy it again if mine disappeared.

Pros:

* Durability.I've gigged in a hundred different bars in five different states. This case has been dropped, thrown, kicked, overturned, rained on, cigarette-burned, beer-drenched (inside and out), and logged a thousand hours behind the seat of my truck in a variety of weathers. The brass is still shiny, the locks still work great, the leather's still supple, and the tweed carries the stains and scars of a dozen memorable shows. All hinges have held up impeccably. Can't ask for more than that.

* Appearance. It just looks cool. And professional.

* Storage space. Just about the right amount of storage space for me. Mine currently packs a harp rack (you have to insert it at an angle), 18 diatonic harps, a multi-tool, a bottle of Neo-Synephrine, two kazoos, a Lee Oskar Harmonica Repair Kit, and a Shure Green Bullet.

Cons:

* No individual dividers. This can make switching keys slow, especially if you aren't creative with organization. I wrote the key on every harp on all sides and line them up longwise in the chromatic slot and horizontally in the tray during shows. Set up takes about 45 seconds, which works for me. Inconvenient, but not bothersome.

* Price. I didn't like that it was so much more expensive than comparable cases, but I'm still glad I got it.

* Tray. I wish I had some idea of how to make this part any better. It just goes wonky and warps once your bass player spills a tall boy on it.

So, there you go. Again, I love mine, but I can understand how some people would hate it.

You get a cd with comp that you canplay along with and a musicbook with harmonica notation that shows how thesongs are built and examples of how you can play. There are slow blues, faster blues, rock etc and they are played in different keys so you needmoore than one harmonica if you should be able to play them all(except ifyou play the chromatic harmonica). Some of the playing examples where goodbut I learned most from playing togheter with the Cd where I learned howand when bluessongs changes keys within the song. This book/Cd showed methat you don't have to play many notes just to sound good - it even soundsgood if you just play the keynotes togheter with Ralph Agresta and hisband.

Hohner Special 20 Major Diatonic Harmonica, Key of G Review

Hohner Special 20 Major Diatonic Harmonica, Key of GI own a lot of Special 20's. It takes a beating and keeps playing. I like to screw around with the reeds and with very little expertise in this area I can give this model a loud, almost amplified tone. I like to give them a dirty sound but if you don't like to screw around under the hood they play well out of the box. They don't "dog-whistle" ring under stress. The Price is right.

Hohner 64 Chromonica, Key of C Review

Hohner 64 Chromonica, Key of CI received my 64 Chromonica this afternoon. My mother brought it to me from my Aunt Dotty. It was previously owned by my Uncle Buddy. She also brought me a Koch Hohner harmonica from them also.

I have played and owned other harmonicas, but none like this one. This harmonica is the twenty-third and best harmonica in my arsenal.I love how the range extends down an octave below middle C.

When I played my Chromonica for the first time outside Sarasota Bradenton International Airport, and heard the low C for the first time, I was shocked and excited. The low C is the same pitch as the open C-String on the viola.

If you have the money for one of these, get yourself one.Chromatic harmonicas are the cream of the crop.

Suzuki Chromatix SCX-48 12 Hole Chromatic Harmonica, Key of C Review

Suzuki Chromatix SCX-48 12 Hole Chromatic Harmonica, Key of CI just received this harmonica and want to share first impressions, as I get a bit more experience I will update the review.

Since the 1970s I have never bought anything but Hohner. Of the Hohner chromatics, I've owned several Super Chromonicas (270), a few Super 64 Chromonicas, and recently tried out the Super Chromonica Deluxe. This is my very first Suzuki.

I think it is important to compare these Hohners with the Suzuki, since you are likely considering the Super Chromonica, which is by and large the most purchased Chromonica given its long history and relatively inexpensive price (also assuming 12 holes are a must, and pretty much, 12 holes is the choice most players will make). And because, to my surprise and delight, the Suzuki is pretty much a dead-ringer for a 12 hole version of the Super 64.

Structurally, and price-wise, the Hohner 270 is at the low end out of the above Hohner models. The body is made of wood, and the reed plates are nailed to the comb (chance for introducing leaks, impossible to take off the reed plates and tweek windsavers, maybe something you can't imagine doing but for some, important). The covers are screwed into the harmonica, and I would say that while I have never found the 270 to be particularly leaky, my belief is that of the three I own, if there were to be a leaky one, this would be it based on these characteristics. And compared to the other two Hohners, it does require a bit more work to play (leaks "steal" air channeled to vibrate reeds, making harmonicas less efficient and requiring more breath from the player). The playing holes are square, and less comfortable. However, the 270 has a wonderful slider, tone, and is generally robust (I have one that is 15 or so years old in playable condition), and has a nearly 100 year proven design. I've played this machine at shows recently, so it's not like I avoid it. At the time of this writing, expect to pay around $125 to $130 for the 270.

At the other end of the spectrum of what I own is the Hohner Super 64. The Super 64 has a much more solid feel to it compared to the Super Chromonica. The reedplates are screwed in, not nailed. The reedplates are also thicker, and generally the construction is much closer to a fully professional, high end harmonica. The covers are screwed in like the 270, but the covers are much more a solid part of the harmonica than on the 270, it's almost like the Super 64 was carved out of one big solid piece of metal -- they extend all the way to the end of the comb, and are curved -- a joy to hold. It's gorgeous to play, easy to get reeds vibrating, no evidence of leaks, and the slider is not bad (but I like the 270 a bit better, actually). The holes are round, not square, and the harmonica is more comfortable to the mouth because of this and a more substantial area to plant your lips. It is about $100 more than the 270 (though it has 4 more holes, that alone would not account for the price difference, you are also paying for quality). If I were playing a classical piece that required even tone across the entire harmonica (from high notes to low), I'd turn to the Super 64 versus the 270.

Somewhere in the middle between the 270 and the Super 64 is the 12 hole Super Chromonica Deluxe, which has screwed in, thicker plates, and a round holed mouthpiece comparable to the Super 64, and better than the 270. The same covers are used as on the 270, which makes it feel less "solid" overall than the Super 64, but also identical to hold as the 270. But the sound is higher quality than the 270 I feel, more comparable to the Super 64. It's just a better 270, in a nutshell, and a joy to play. Price is $50 to $60 more than the 270.

So now comes this Suzuki 12 hole. It came in a solid plastic carrying case, just like all the Hohners do. They added a cleaning cloth, which only the Super 64 comes with, and was a nice touch. When I picked it up and put it to my mouth, I immediately felt that this was a Super 64 (but with only 12 holes, not 16 of course), and a much higher quality instrument than the 270 in terms of construction. But with a better mouthpiece (round holes like the Super 64, but a bigger area to plant the lips). In short, this has to be the most comfortable mouthpiece I have ever played.

The slider was of an extremely high quality, and I issued rapid trills with it that were highly accurate and just delightful to play. This harp has the best slider I have ever experienced. The tone was very nice, and I could play 11th and 12th hole without any difficulty. I have owned 270s which were very difficult to play holes 11 and 12 on (though good technique is and important factor here, so you can't always blame the harmonica). The Super 64 and the Super Chromonica deluxe also respond well in holes 11 or 12, and I would say the quality of sound is comparable to these two.

So, my first impression is "I just bought a Super 64/Super Chromonica Deluxe quality harp with 12 holes, for the much less expensive price of a Super Chromonica 270." Wow!

So, I hate to say it Hohner, but Suzuki, at first impression, offers a better product compared to 270, at about the same price. It's also competitive with, and less expensive than, the Super Chromonica Deluxe, plus it feels more solid and has a more comfortable mouthpiece. It feels like a 12 hole Super 64, and has attributes of its construction that make it more solid, probably more airtight, and more comfortable to play than the Super Chromonica Deluxe, but about $50 dollars less expensive.

I'd hands down pick this over a Hohner 270, no question. If you love the Super 64, you'll want to buy one of these if you are looking for a harp that is smaller and easier to hold, but has similar construction and quality. If you are thinking of Super 64 quality but only need 12 holes, try out this harp. $100 less is a good thing. However, if you love the Super Chromonica and swear on Hohners but want more quality, then check out the Super Chromonica Deluxe, but do know it will cost you more to own one.

Advice:

-- First time Chromonica buyer: Buy what you can afford, as any of these harps would be good.
-- Looking to upgrade from Super Chromonica: Super Chromonica Deluxe or this Suzuki, with the Suzuki being less expensive and quite possible more comfortable to play. Super Chromonica Deluxe has the same shape, covers, and slider as a 270 so if you really feel comfortable with the 270, the deluxe may be a great upgrade and worth the extra cost.
-- Need one octave below middle C: Super 64, or the 16 hole version of the Suzuki (also sold by Amazon) might be an option.
-- Love the Super 64 but want a smaller and/or far less expensive harp with 3 octaves: definitely check out the Suzuki models. In short, I'm awfully impressed by the construction, quality, and overall value so far.

For each song, there is a story about the song and how Dylan's choices on harmonica relate to the song. The background material is relevant and interesting. Tips on the different techniques Dylan used in each song are there as well. The author conveys knowledge and generates enthusiasm for the music she presents.

This book is much more than just harp tabs.Appleby give the key of the song (I think they are correct, which is not true for many books out there), and also the key of the harmonica Dylan used. Blows and draws, slurs, slides, bends, trills, throat popping, and wah-wah are indicated. Guitar chords schematics are on each page of music. I only wish the book had more than 12 songs. I would definitely by another if the author creates a similar book with more songs.

Suzuki Overdrive Deluxe Bendable Harmonica, Key of C Review

Suzuki Overdrive Deluxe Bendable Harmonica, Key of CI have many harmonicas and I've been playing for years. I'm not a professional, but I'm not a novice either. What I like about the Suzuki Overdrive is that it takes very little air to vibrate the reeds. It can be played quietly and easily, and it always gives a pure, delightful sound. Try it...you'll like it for quiet times. If you want a loud, bluesy sound, get a Lee Oskar.

It's the Only Harmonica of Its Kind.Years in the making, the amazing new Overdrive Harmonica is so unique, it even has a special patent to protect its incredible design. Precisely placed holes in the top and bottom of this harmonica allow you to produce thick, rich and beautiful over-blow and over-draw sounds. Although players have been bending notes for more than a century, it has only recently been discovered that when you draw bend, it is the BLOW reed that makes the bent note. Conversely, when you blow bend, it is the opposite blow reed in the same air channel that makes the bent note. With a little practice, the new Overdrive Harmonica will let you blow and draw notes with greater control and much bigger volume than any harmonica you've ever played! Comes with deluxe carrying case.

Johnson Blues King Harmonica, Key of G Review

Johnson Blues King Harmonica, Key of GThe amazing price of this harp might steer someone away from it thinking it must be low quality.I've been playing Johnsons for several years and find they play well and are very durable. It wasn't until I started thinking my original Johnson harps, which were a gift from a dear friend, might need replacing at some point that I discovered how inexpensive they were.

Bluegrass Harmonica [Paperback] Review

Bluegrass Harmonica [Paperback]This guys technique is amazing and if you like Bluegass or oldtime music at all, this book, along with the indispensible Rock n' Blues Harmonica by Jon Gindick and the Blues Harmonica Collection (both top amazon sellers) will definitly improve your technique as well as your way of looking at the diatonic harmonica. That is, much of the technique and approach here is to play the diatonic harp chromatically, using bends of course. As the cover states, this book goes from beginning to advanced and it's not one of those books you check out for a day or two and put away. If your interested in really learning how to play harmonica there's alot of technique and great tunes in this book and cd. Don't be put off if you're not really into bluegrass. It is more country oriented than most harp books to be sure but alot of the tunes in here are traditional and originals by Stevens. The techniques however are incredible and learning what this guy has to teach will vastly improve your playing even if you only want to play blues harp. I can't help but have the same thought as the other reviewer that this guy not only wrote a great instruction book but is one of the best harp players in the world.

Musician's Gear Hardshell Harmonica Case, Black Review

Musician's Gear Hardshell Harmonica Case, BlackAfter purchasing this case on amazon, I'm very happy with it.It is fairly large and can easily hold all of my harmonicas.

The way they show the case with the harmonicas vertically seems like it might be difficult to tell which harmonica was which and what key each was.I actually keep mine stored horizontally. It won't quite store as many that way, but I still have probably 15 in there.Since there are no dividers between the harps putting them vertically might make them rub together a bit too much when being carried.Horizontal makes it easy to see each harp and they still fit great. So it might be better that there aren't any dividers.

There's no good place for a piccolo but I don't think that's a big deal.

The case is very sturdy and looks nice. The inside is completely lined with a very soft fuzzy cloth.Even the underside of the removable tray is lined.

The only slight downside is probably that the locking mechanism a bit flimsy. It would still keep out someone who shouldn't be nosing around in there. But it won't stop a malicious person. Then again they could just take the whole case instead of stealing a single harp anyway.

Overall it's just like it looks.

Hohner Leather Harmonica Case Review

Hohner Leather Harmonica CaseCase starts out being tight and difficult but after a few days use it stretches and becomes quite usable. My remedy was just to place the harmonica (also a Special 20) in the case with the last 1/4" or so not stuffed all the way in. If you're expecting this to be like a gun holster for quick draws, you will be disappointed. If you want a simple piece of protection for the instrument that can be tossed in your pocket or a backpack without consuming the space of the larger plastic case - then this will do nicely. I carry it with me essentially everywhere. It keeps the harp clean and secure.

Learn to Play The Blues Guitar (and Harmonica) of John Hammond Review

Learn to Play The Blues Guitar of John HammondI almost passed out when I saw this. There is almost no available video of John Hammond. All I've been able to compile over the years is 2- half hour Austin City Limits shows and an older instructional video he did many years ago. Now there is this and an amazing new Paris concert DVD. I found out about them on the same day and ordered them both immediately. I was not disappointed. John is so humble and gracious when interviewed which contrasts with his power and emotion when playing. His voice and playing are in the best shape of his career and I'm so glad that both have been captured for ever on this (and the Paris) DVD.

Specifics: This is not a DVD that will teach beginners how to play the blues although there is a lot they can still absorb and take away from it. Even non guitar playing fans of John will love this for the stories and the close up playing and as I said because there is so little available video of John. The Tablature that comes with it is very useful but does not always match perfectly what John plays. Only small sections of what John plays shows up in the Tab booklet that comes with it. Although the title mentions harmonica playing there is basically no instruction on harp playing other than a broad discussion of what keys he uses. I have some harp playing experience and wasn't able to add to it from this video. The split screens are nice and the DVD is nice and long at about 2 hours so it doesn't feel rushed.Note, he covers both standard tuned acoustic guitar and open tuned resonator guitar.

I love this DVD but feel it is more about being up close with John while he does his thing than about learning to do what he does. That's why I think it has wider appeal than just guitar players.

Hohner 1490 Blues Blaster Harmonica Microphone Review

Hohner 1490 Blues Blaster Harmonica MicrophoneThere were two generations of Blues Blasters made. The first generation, which is what I have, uses an astatic MC151 element. These elements were used in the original JT-30's of the 1930's & 40's. I have to say that for a reproduction JT-30, which is what hohner was trying to do, it is a fairly descent mic. If you can find any of these original Blues Blaster's with the MC151, and it still works, (the elements do go bad after a few years of continuous use) I would buy one.

Now on to the second generation Blues Blaster. This is the reason for the 2 stars. Hohner ran out of astatic elements and had to start using very Very! VERY! cheap japanese made elements. These elements are no where near the quality or anywhere near the great sound that the MC151 elemet will give you. The best way to describe the sound is like playing through a tin can, that's right a TIN CAN. They do not last very long, because they are so cheaply made. Hohner really messed up with these new version Blues Blasters.

So like I said, if you can find a first gen Blues Blaster, buy it. If you want an original JT-30 which you can buy on Ebay or other second hand sales places, buy it. Do not buy the 2nd gen Blues Blaster's, they are worthless.

Hohner Marine Band Crossover Harmonica C M2009BL-C Review

Hohner Marine Band Crossover Harmonica C M2009BL-CPurchased this harp a few weeks ago and was generally pleased with it. I play professionally and have over 8 years experience and usually play in the cross-harp mode doing standards, rock, pop and country.

It is airtight, easily bendable including overblows, and loud and well made!! BUT>>>is it worth the $59 price...NOOOO! In my humble opinion, my Special 20's come pretty darn close to the performance of these and they are less than half the price!
I feel Hohner is price gouging considering bamboo is not expensive! I rather buy 2 Spec 20's for the price on 1 Crossover!!Just my opinion...

Hurricance Harps 1664 Chromatic Harmonica, Key of C Review

Hurricance Harps 1664 Chromatic Harmonica, Key of CBased on information I read in the other ratings displayed, I ordered the Huang 1248 with the expectation of buying a quality instrument. My order arrived quickly and the instrument is very nice looking. However, I found it nearly impossible to play notes softly in the lower and upper octaves of the "C" section. A large amount of air is required to achieve any tone and the tone is loud and brassy. Using the "C#" section of the instrument, I was able to achieve in both lower and upper octaves tones that were totally controllable in volume. I never experienced this condition using my Hohner, so I don't believe it's my technique. I'm very hesitant to recommend this instrument.

Suzuki Promaster Harmonica, Key of Low F Review

Suzuki Promaster Harmonica, Key of Low FCompared to these, Hohners (all of them) feel cheaply made. I found the Suzuki also sounds warmer and fuller, especially in the high pitches where the Hohners often squeak. It is sturdy enough to carry in your back pocket and accidentally sit on it (that's why I had to replace my Hohner).
The Low F is wonderfully low and could be used for high-note F songs where a high F would be too shrill. Also check out their Firebreath line.

Hohner American Ace Harmonica, Key of G Review

Hohner American Ace Harmonica, Key of GI bought a handful of harmonicas all at the same time (the ones under $10), just to see which of the styles I liked best. Out of the case, this one needed some warming up, but was also a lower pitch, and took some getting used to. Once broken in, it has a surprisingly good tone quality for such an instrument. It is easy to take apart to clean and adjust. On the con side, the holes in the comb are almost half the size of my other harps. I find this a puzzling design feature, and makes it difficult to play precisely when switching from another harp.

The Beatles Greatest Hits for Harmonica [Paperback] Review

The Beatles Greatest Hits for Harmonica [Paperback]I bought this because it was recommended for beginners. The arrangements are easy and a lot of fun to play. The rythymn is not always precisely what you'd here on the original recording; but you can "rubato" it a little to make it work.On some of the slower songs, filling in the 7ths makes the sound better.
I wish there were more dynamic markings for loudness to help better duplicate what you hear on the record/CD.But then again, these are "Easy Piano" arrangements.
I highly recommend this book for beginners who want to make music and not just play the piano.
